Virola callophyla was for a long time indicated by the Indians who used it in a shamanic manner, as the most valued Virola species. The drug was employed ritualistically for diagnosis and treatment of disease, prophecy, divination, and other magico-religious purposes.

Effects

The major alkaloid constituent appears to be 5-MeO-DMT with lesser amounts of DMT. Exacts amounts and therefore dosage suggestions are yet unknown.

Effects and side-effects are varied depending on the species used, dosage, and concentration of the drug. Generally, it brings on an initial excitability, followed by numbness and tingling in various parts of the body, loss of somatic coordination, nausea, visual hallucinations, and finally a deep sleep.

Usage

Virola was traditionally boiled down into a thick paste and then dried and eaten or snorted as powder.
